With yesterday’s victory over Andy Murray on Centre Court at Wimbledon, Roger Federer became the #1 ranked tennis player in the world, won his record tying 7th Wimbledon title, and won his 17th Grand Slam tournament (the most in history). Is Federer the best tennis player of all-time, I’m not sure, but he’s definitely the leader in that discussion.
A few things went right for Federer to be able to win this but he also had to do his part. It surprised me that he was able to do that. And by doing that I pretty much mean that he was able to take down Djokovic on grass. Federer has really been a treat to watch throughout his career and it’s amazing what he’s been able to do at 30. He deserves this Wimbledon title. Is he the greatest ever? I’d say yes but it is so tough to say that when he’s had so much trouble against Nadal in his career. Very difficult to compare across generations. Also, you think you could take a look at my blog post because I really would love to know what you have to say http://chrisross91.wordpress.com/2012/07/09/never-to-be-seen-again/
It was certainly a great tournament. It’s hard to compare across generations and even across surfaces, but it’s cool that tennis might be in a golden age right now.
Murray had an entire nation behind him, and he gave it a superhuman effort, and still lost in four sets. There simply is no touching the world’s best three players: Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.
I loved the support for Murray throughout the tournament. It’s a glimpse in to what we’ll see on a larger scale at the Olympics later this month. And yeah, this was an impressive win that shows how unreal the top talent in the world is if Murray can play that well and still get beat so easily. That was tough watching him emotional on the court afterwards.
