It’s official. Jameis Winston is the new starting quarterback for The Florida State University. While the whole world outside of Tallahassee thought it was a formality that “Black Jesus” would step in to fill the void left from the past two garnet and gold wearing NFL first round quarterbacks (Christian Ponder & EJ Manuel), Winston did find himself in a tight race with redshirt sophomore Jacob Coker this spring and summer.
Of the quarterback competition, FSU’s head coach Jimbo Fisher said, “this was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to go through. This isn’t coach-talk, this is none of that. We truly have two very good quarterbacks. They’re guys I feel very comfortable starting and making plays.” Even if there was a tiny hint of coach-speak (which I don’t feel there is in this case), the fact that we’re now just 10 days from the kickoff of the season and the team has just now finally decided on the #1 quarterback speaks volumes about the ability of both these quarterbacks.
There are a ton of expectations on the 6’4”, 230 pound Winston who starred on the baseball diamond this spring and who is now ready to take center stage right next door in Doak Campbell Stadium with just a few more spectator eyes on him. Fans, please remember that while he has showcased his arm playing right field he is yet to take a snap under center at the college level and there are growing pains with EVERY young player. If FSU’s highly touted defense is able to bail out some of the rookie mistakes this could be a special fall in Tallahassee and the play of #5 would be a huge part of that.
It’s your time, Jaboo.
